Adults

Finding the Best Approach for You: Understanding Our Medication Assessment Process for Adults

As an adult, finding the right support for ADHD can feel crucial, and that includes the potential role of medication. Our priority is to develop a personalized treatment plan that best suits your individual needs.  Here's why we take a careful and thorough approach to medication assessment:

  • Tailored Treatment: Sometimes, adults with a clear prior diagnosis may be able to discuss medication options at the first visit. However, most often, a careful assessment allows us to tailor recommendations specifically for your current needs and experiences.
  • Understanding Complexities: Adult ADHD can sometimes occur alongside other conditions like anxiety or depression, which may have developed over time. A thorough assessment helps us create a treatment plan that addresses your overall well-being.
  • Your Input Matters: An in-depth consultation allows us to learn about your medical history, past experiences with medication (if any), and any specific concerns or questions you have.
  • Partnership for Success: We work with you to determine the most appropriate treatment approach, whether it involves medication, other therapies, or a combination to provide the best possible outcome.

Our goal is to help you achieve your goals and manage ADHD effectively.

Children

A Team Approach: Medication as Part of a Comprehensive Treatment Plan

When we consider medication for children and adolescents, it's crucial to understand that it's always one piece of a larger, personalized treatment plan. This holistic approach might include:

  • Individual Therapy: To support your child's emotional well-being and build coping skills.
  • Family Therapy: To foster healthy communication and problem-solving within the family.
  • Parent Coaching: To empower parents with effective strategies for supporting their child.
  • School Consultations: Collaborating with educators to optimize classroom success.
  • ADHD Coaching: Offering practical support and skill development for your child.
  • Professional Organizing: If needed, helping your child develop organizational systems.

Our Goal: To create a supportive environment where your child can thrive. We'll work with you to design a plan that best addresses your child's specific needs.

Our Process & Treatment Model

Step 1: A Thorough Diagnostic Assessment

  • We'll begin with a dedicated one-hour diagnostic interview. This focused conversation helps us pinpoint a diagnosis (or confirm an existing one).
  • This ensures we tailor your treatment plan to your specific needs and circumstances.

Step 2: Exploring Medication Options (if appropriate)

  • If your doctor believes medication could be helpful, we'll schedule a second appointment to discuss:
    • Different medication types, dosages, and potential side effects
    • How to adjust medications safely (titration) and how to track your progress.

Why a Two-Part Process?

  • Personalized Care: We take the time to understand your unique situation to provide the best possible support.
  • Informed Decisions: We want you to feel confident and comfortable when exploring medication options.

Scheduling Flexibility:

  • While a two-part intake allows for the most comprehensive approach, your doctor may suggest same-day appointments in certain cases.

Follow-Up Care

  • Close Monitoring (At First): If you start a new medication, we'll check in every 3-4 weeks for adjustments and to ensure it's the right fit.
  • Ongoing Support: To ensure the best results, your doctor will likely want to see you every 4-6 weeks if any medication adjustments are needed, such as an increased dose, a new medication, or if you're not seeing the improvements you expect. Once you're stable, medication management visits will occur every three months for optimal results.

Questions & Concerns

  • We Understand Prior Experiences: Many of our patients come to us after having limited success with prior medications. Our expertise and in-depth evaluations can offer fresh solutions.
  • Our Specialized Knowledge: Our team focuses exclusively on ADHD and related conditions, giving us a deeper understanding of these challenges.
  • A Holistic Approach: We believe in a well-rounded approach that may include healthy habits, life skills development, and therapy in addition to medication (if appropriate).
  • Your Choice (for your child): If you're exploring medication for your child, we respect your concerns. We'll provide clear information, but the decision is always yours.
