The Chesapeake Center is well-known for our comprehensive testing and assessment for attention, behavioral, learning, and processing disorders.
Over the last few months, we have dedicated ourselves to the full-time administration of virtual testing. Our team has done extensive research on the validity of virtual testing, as well as a number of practice sessions with various ages.
Based on the research and our experience, we are confident in the results and have found that virtual assessments are just as valid as in-person.
We have also spoken with a number of educators, universities, and individuals in the public and private sectors who agree that results of virtual testing are valid and sufficient to document the need for accommodations in school and work.
Some things can wait, some can’t. When it comes to you or your child’s health and success, don’t put it on hold. Get the answers you need.
We are pleased to announce that we are now able to conduct full online assessments including:
Our team of psychologists has worked hard to prepare for this shift to online testing. While there are some assessment tools that cannot be administered online due to their “hands-on” nature, the great majority of assessment tools have been made available by their publishers for online administration.
Determining if your child is appropriate for online testing
Some children may be too young or too restless and impulsive to be tested online. During our intake consultation, we will work with parents to determine whether their child is appropriate for online testing. There is no commitment to testing until this determination is made.
Parent role during testing
The degree to which parents need to support the testing process will be determined individually, based on the age and temperament of your child. A parent will need to remain available throughout each testing session either in the testing room or immediately outside of it. Your tester will give you instructions at the end of your intake appointment regarding your role in the testing process.
Shortening each testing session for children
Our experience in testing young children online has been very positive. We have shortened the length of each testing session to accommodate the shorter attention span of younger children –in most cases, we will test over three short sessions (occasionally four sessions) in contrast to the standard two-session assessment process (3 hours each) that we followed when conducting in-person testing.
Testing for teens and adults
While we are prepared to be flexible, in most cases of online testing with teens and adults we will proceed as usual, with two longer testing sessions for psychoeducational and neuropsychological assessments and only one testing session for the assessment of adult ADHD.
Hybrid testing (in-person and online)
As the pandemic eases and as it becomes much safer to meet in person we may move to a hybrid testing process where some testing that must be done in person, such as the ADOS-2 for Autism, is conducted at our Chesapeake main center under carefully controlled conditions, while most testing continues to be conducted online.
We are pleased to announce that even those organizations that are unusually demanding in accepting assessment results such as the GRE (Graduate Record Exam) and the MCAT (Medical College Admissions Test) are now accepting the results of online testing. Our professional organizations – the American Psychological Association and the Maryland Psychological Association – endorse online testing in order that we can continue to serve the needs of our clients.
